LA mayor shakes up staff
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa made major changes to his staff Thursday. KPCC’s Frank Stoltze reports.
Frank Stoltze: The mayor named his gang reduction and youth development director Jeff Carr as his chief of staff. Carr’s an evangelical minister credited with improving the city’s anti-gang programs.
Jeff Carr: I plan on bringing the same tenacity to helping the mayor execute his agenda to run this city.
Stoltze: Banging the lectern to underscore his point, Villaraigosa said it’s a full agenda that requires “new creative thinking.”
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa: I've got to pick a new fire chief [pounds fist], a new police chief [pounds fist], balance this budget, and the list goes on and on. So yes, we need this kind of leadership right now.
Stoltze: The new leadership includes a former spokesman for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, Jay Carson. He’ll serve as chief deputy mayor with a broad portfolio that includes education and economic development. Outgoing chief of staff Robin Kramer said she’s leaving on her own volition.
