LA County says elimination of CalWORKS could jeopardize federal stimulus dollars
Los Angeles County officials say the elimination of the state’s CalWORKS welfare program would jeopardize more than $150 million in federal stimulus money.
David Sommers of Supervisor Don Knabe’s office says LA County had planned to use the money to provide temporary employment for 10,000 workers.
David Sommers: "The state may be facing a drastic fiscal crisis, but we hope that the state sees the bigger picture in that ten thousand employees that are spending paychecks in the community, that are buying groceries that are buying gasoline - that's tax revenue."
Governor Schwarzenegger has proposed eliminating Cal-WORKS to help close a 24-billion dollar budget shortfall.
Some Democratic state lawmakers have vowed to fight that cut.
