Los Angeles County firefighters will begin brush clearance inspections on more than 39,000 residential properties in wildland areas of the county beginning May 1, it was announced today.

It's the first step in the county fire department's "Ready! Set! Go!'' public education program designed to teach residents how to save life and property, said fire Chief Michael Freeman.

Last year, two county firefighters died in the Station Fire that burned more than 160,000 acres, making it the largest in county history.

Firefighters will visit each property to inspect it for weeds, combustible debris and dead or dying vegetation that could create potential fire hazards.

The county plan is available at
