L.A. County Names Sixth Inglewood School District Leader In Last 7 Years
A rotating cast of appointed executives has been leading the Inglewood Unified Schools since the district fell into state receivership in 2012. L.A. County Education officials have named Erika Torres as the district’s sixth leader in the last seven years.
Until recently, Torres was an L.A. County official advising outgoing administrator Thelma Melendez de Santa Ana. She’s retiring.
In 2012, state lawmakers swooped in to rescue Inglewood Unified with $29 million in loans. Once in receivership, the school board became an advisory body, and the state replaced the superintendent with an appointed administrator.
Inglewood Unified remains in trouble. State lawmakers just passed a bill that helped the district avoid gutting employee benefits … but still other cuts are coming. And Inglewood Unified officials have noted the state receivership status has made it difficult to attract qualified teachers.
