KPCC wins 6 awards at 68th Golden Mikes

Truth matters. Community matters. Your support makes both possible. LAist is one of the few places where news remains independent and free from political and corporate influence. Stand up for truth and for LAist. Make your year-end tax-deductible gift now.

Didn't think public radio reported on sports? Think again. KPCC's Sharon McNary took home a trophy at the 68th Golden Mike Awards for her story about ultra-marathoning mom Martine Sesma, a rape and child abuse survivor who runs as a form of therapy.

Hosted by the Radio & Television News Association of Southern California, the annual awards honor journalists in both mediums. The ceremony was held Saturday night.

KPCC journalists also took home awards for Broke: A Special Report by Rina Palta and Priska Neely about why more California families are becoming homeless, Behested Payments by Aaron Mendelson and Mary Plummer about the tricky area of philanthropy where politicians solicit millions for their favorite causes, AirTalk's live coverage of the great North American solar eclipse, The Frame's story on the legacy of "The Joy Luck Club" and a look at why California gun sales are shattering records.

Reporter Dave Lopez and two veteran local news anchors — Chuck Henry of our media partner NBC4 and Christine Devine of KTTV/Fox 11 — received Lifetime Achievement awards.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our connected community. We are free to tell the full truth, to hold power to account without fear or favor, and to follow facts wherever they lead. Our only loyalty is to our audiences and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen our community.

Right now, LAist has lost $1.7M in annual funding due to Congress clawing back money already approved. The support we receive before year-end will determine how fully our newsroom can continue informing, serving, and strengthening Southern California.
