Kayak, if you dare, along a stretch of the LA River
The Los Angeles River opens this week to seasonal recreation. Paddlers will be able to kayak along a small stretch of the waterway.
Various groups have demonstrated that there’s more to the L.A. River than concrete and graffiti. Along its 50 miles, a scenic, soft-bottomed stretch allows kayakers to glide away from the sounds of auto traffic and glimpse wildlife up close, like a heron landing on the branch of a tree.
Friends of the L.A. River and other nonprofits teamed up with a tour operator for guided river trips north of the 101 and west of the 405 freeways through the Sepulveda Basin, from Balboa to Burbank boulevards.
During a tryout phase, people began to skim these waters in kayaks last year. This year that program expands to offer more people opportunities to paddle seven days a week through the summer months.
Tickets are $50 for two-hour tours and are available online. Tickets go on sale starting Tuesday at 7 a.m.
