Inland Empire hosts Memorial Day tributes

The sounds of jet planes, motorcycles and military bands will permeate the calm of Riverside National Cemetery during its annual Memorial Day tribute. It’s the region’s largest and best-known event this holiday. Other lesser-known, equally worthy events will also attract crowds today.
The Cal Poly Pomona Concert band performed during an early morning veteran memorial service at Pomona Cemetery.
In Ontario, the Chafey Community Show Band performs a tribute concert at Bellevue Memorial Park.
Corona’s American Legion Memorial Day service features Korean War veteran Dennis Salgado, director of the Corona Veterans’ Memorial Division. The communities of Yucaipa & Calimesa present their annual ceremonies at Desert Lawn Memorial Park. The names of local residents who died in combat will be recited.
Skydivers and Civil War re-enactors are part of an observance at Lake Elsinore Valley Cemetery. Costumed re-enactors will also appear at Cherry Valley’s Living History Legacy Weekend.
Want something more low-key? The VFW in Sun City hosts a Memorial Day morning coffee social with retired Navy Lt. and Menifee Councilman Scott Mann. He spearheaded construction of the city’s war memorial monument.
“The fact you’re here speaks volumes about the community of Menifee, the proud veterans that live here, the proud veterans that still serve and may God bless the United States of America, thank you," says Mann.
And in nearby Murrieta, the public library will host a brunch for military mothers. Not able to get a table there? Try Mama Colletti's Pizzeria in Murrieta – it’ll be serving free meals all day to all active duty and retired military personnel.
As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.
Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.
We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.
No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.
Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.
Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
