Hemet Police shoot, kill suspect following chase
Officers shot and killed a suspect in the unincorporated area of East Hemet following a chase early Tuesday morning . The Riverside County Sheriff's Department is investigating the incident.
A Hemet Police officer attempted a traffic stop in Hemet at approximately 2 a.m., according to a release from the Sheriff's Department, but the driver of the vehicle failed to stop. A chase followed.
Police tried to disable the suspect's vehicle using spike strips. The vehicle came to a stop in East Hemet, where the suspect exited with a firearm, according to the release. Police shot the suspect near the intersection of Sharose Drive and Girard Street.
Officers attempted to save the suspect's life and paramedics later arrived and provided medical treatment, but the suspect died, according to the release.
The suspect's identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave, which is department policy. The officer's identity is also being withheld at this time.
