Brown appoints 7 to powerful California State Board of Education

Governor Jerry Brown has announced his appointees to the powerful State Board of Education.

Brown appointed all but three of the 11 members on the State Board. They include former Long Beach Unified Superintendent Carl Cohn and James Ramos, the chairman of the San Manuel Band of Indians in San Bernardino.

Stanford University education researcher Michael Kirst will also serve, as he did more than 30 years ago during Brown’s first term as governor. Also joining the board is former California Superintendent of Schools Bill Honig and California Teachers Association lobbyist Patricia Rucker.

Aida Molina, a school district administrator from Bakersfield and Trish Williams, the executive director of the education research firm EdSource, also said yes to Brown’s request to serve.

Brown’s appointees are all registered Democrats. They’ll receive a $100 daily stipend for their service. The State Board of Education sets statewide policy on issues from student testing and instructional material to charter school petitions.
