Favorite Newport Beach carousel looking for a new place to spin
An iconic carousel that's been shut down for weeks at Newport Beach's Balboa Fun Zone will go 'round and round again someplace else.
Some say the amusement ride that's been around for decades will move to Orange County's Westminster area, just in time for next summer.
The carousel shut down in September after the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum chose not to renew the lease for the land on which the carousel ran. The museum plans to use it for a new interactive learning center.
About a week ago, 50 or so students at Corona del Mar High school demonstrated, urging the museum to leave that fun zone alone. Now, museum staff say folks can continue to ride the Ferris wheel and enjoy other activities along the three-block area.
As for the carousel, workers have broken it down and packed it up. The longtime park operator vows it'll find a new home once its operators work out a solid deal.
