Debra Wong Yang confirmed for LAPD Commission
The Los Angeles City Council Wednesday confirmed former U.S. Attorney Debra Wong Yang as a member of the Police Commission. The mayor appointed Yang to the civilian panel, which sets policy for the LAPD.
Yang joins the five-member police commission at an especially important moment. Over the next six weeks, the panel will interview candidates to replace Chief Bill Bratton, and refer three finalists to the mayor
Yang told the City Council she saw the selection of a new chief as crucial to maintaining reforms at the LAPD. She also said she’d seek to minimize the effect of budget cuts at the department as the city grapples with a $400 million budget shortfall.
Yang is a partner at Gibson, Dunn, and Crutcher. She co-chairs the firm’s crisis management and white collar defense investigations groups. She is of Cantonese decent and was the first Asian-American woman in the country to serve as a U.S. attorney.
Yang replaces Anthony Pacheco, who resigned this summer to return to his law practice.
