LA County DA candidates Lacey, Jackson face off Tuesday night in first debate
The battle to become Los Angeles County's chief prosecutor enters a new phase Tuesday night inside the Ron Deaton Civil Auditorium adjacent to LAPD headquarters.
That's where Chief Deputy District Attorney Jackie Lacey and Deputy District Attorney Alan Jackson meet in their first face-to-face debate since the primary election June 5. Lacey placed first in the primary with 32 percent of the vote, while Jackson finished second with 24 percent.
Both are vying to succeed L.A. County DA Steve Cooley, who has decided not to seek a fourth term.
Lacey enjoys Cooley's backing, but she's off to a slow fundraising start. She raised about $70,00 in the latest reporting period — meanwhile, Jackson raised $380,000.
Lacey, 55, is vying to become the first woman and first African-American district attorney in L.A. history. She is a Democrat, although the race is nonpartisan.
Jackson,46, is a Republican who works in the DA’s major crimes division. He prosecuted legendary record producer Phil Spector and makes regular appearances on "Dateline NBC."
The district attorney debate starts at 7 p.m.
