Los Angeles criminal courts building closed again Tuesday
Officials say flooding will keep the criminal courts building in downtown Los Angeles closed for a second day today.
Court officials closed the building after a basement sewer line broke open over the weekend. They shut the water off for the 18-floor facility that houses dozens of courtrooms and the Los Angeles County district attorney and his staff.
Court officials postponed trials and said jurors wouldn’t need to show up. They moved the arraignments of accused criminals – which must take place within 48 hours of arrest – to other courthouses.
The building’s official name is the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center. Foltz became the first woman lawyer in California in 1978, after she persuaded the state Legislature to amend a law that said only white males could practice.
Officials hope to reopen the building on Wednesday.
