Cox launches Time Warner Cable's sports networks in time for tonight's Lakers game

Cox Communications is adding Time Warner Cable’s new sports channels to its network just in time for tonight's Los Angeles Lakers game against the Utah Jazz.

Cox Communications provides cable TV to 1.2 million customers in San Diego, Orange County, and Palos Verdes.

In Orange County, Cox subscribers can tune in Time Warner Cable SportsNet on channels 65 and 1065 in HD. Time Warner Cable Deportes is on channel 85. In Palos Verdes, the channels are 70, 85, and 1070 in HD.

Cox is the most recent cable TV provider to reach a deal to add Time Warner Cable’s sports channels. The channels are the exclusive home of most LA Lakers games.

Cox says the new channels are being added to its TV Essential service package, which the vast majority of its customers have. Cox says those customers will not pay additional monthly fees for the channels. But the channels are  not included in Cox's TV Starter lineup, the company's most basic level of service.

Charter Cable, AT&T’s U-verse and Verizon FIOS have also signed up to provide the channels. But satellite providers DirecTV and Dish, which serve more than a third of the Southern California market, are still on the sidelines. A Time Warner Cable spokeswoman says negotiations with both companies are ongoing.
