Contract awarded for Metro Gold Line extension
Light rail passengers can look forward to five new Metro Gold Line stops in the San Gabriel Valley. The Foothill Extension Construction Authority board of directors greenlighted the extension contract today.
That contract to two construction companies — Kiewit and Parsons — is worth more than $485 million. It’ll make way for Gold Line stations in downtown Arcadia and Monrovia, Irwindale, Duarte across from City of Hope hospital, and in Azusa right by Citrus College and Azusa Pacific University.
The new stops will stretch 11.5 miles eastward from the Sierra Madre Villa station in Pasadena, where the Gold Line ends now. Los Angeles County Metro officials say construction could begin next year and could wrap up in about four years.
L.A. County voters are footing much of the bill — two-thirds of them approved transportation money through Measure R in November 2008. That initiative committed $40 billion to regional transportation upgrades and traffic relief projects.
