Coast Guard practices high-speed chase techniques
If you're near the Port of Los Angeles on Saturday and you see small boats performing risky, high-speed, maneuvers, don't panic. It's not a "Miami Vice" episode come to life.
Three port security teams with the U.S. Coast Guard are conducting an annual military training exercise — complete with the sound of simulated automatic weapon fire.
These exercises can be applied to a number of different situations, petty officer Sondrakay Kneen tells KPCC.
"It could range from a small boat chase, whether we're chasing down somebody who's running away or boarding a vessel that isn't in compliance."
A "safety zone" prohibiting other boats from driving within 500 yards of the training area is in place until 8 p.m. Saturday.
