Los Angeles city leaders and organizers rally for Denim Day
Advocates and city leaders rallied on the steps of City Hall in downtown Los Angeles for the 20th anniversary of Denim Day — an international campaign calling for an end to sexual harassment, abuse, assault and rape.
The campaign was sparked 20 years ago when a rape case in Italy was overturned. The judge ruled that since the victim was wearing tight jeans that she had to help take off — the incident was consensual.
That decision led many to call for greater education about sexual violence and harassment. It’s an issue the city of L.A. has struggled with among its government workers. The city has paid out millions of dollars in sexual harassment claims in recent years.
