Institutions along parade route prepare for Rose Parade
Saturday’s Tournament of Roses Parade is a boon for some Pasadena businesses. Other organizations creatively use what they have to bring in some money during one of the year’s biggest tourist events. Many churches along Colorado Boulevard have sold bleacher seats in prime parade-viewing spots.
Pasadena Presbyterian Church is the oldest church in Pasadena, going back to 1875. It's one of the many houses of worship on Colorado Boulevard along the Rose Parade route - and this weekend, it's also serving as a viewing spot.
Anita Krelis, who does publicity for the church, says they expect 600 or more visitors each year, raising the church about $7,000.
"[They] comprise mainly membership and also people from the community and abroad, from other states, who've come in to watch the parade and also to go to the Rose Bowl," she said.
Krelis will be watching as well, although from the comfort of her home. But the preparations remind her of her childhood.
"I grew up in La Crescenta, so I know the parade very well," she said. "I used to come as a child with friends from another church youth group. We used to sleep overnight - well, no one slept. You stayed awake all night."
