CHP officers shoot man on 5 freeway
Details are still unclear about an incident that occurred early Sunday morning on the 5 freeway, when California Highway Patrol shot and killed a man in the Boyle Heights area.
Patrol Officer Elizabeth Kravig tells KPCC that the department received calls late Saturday night about a pedestrian walking along the 5 freeway, just north of the 10 interchange.
Officers arrived around midnight and there was a confrontation. The shooting occurred shortly after. The pedestrian died at the scene. No officers were injured.
Freeway lanes in both directions were closed immediately after the shooting.
The northbound 5 freeway was closed to all traffic between the 10 freeway and Broadway. Drivers were diverted to the 10 east. That closure was lifted shortly after 11 a.m.
The first and second lanes of the southbound 5 freeway were reopened earlier this morning.
