The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department says it shot and killed a man after he pulled a handgun on them early Sunday morning after a chase in South Gate.

Deputies were called to the 8900 block of Kauffman Avenue at 3:58 a.m. Sunday, the department said in a statement, after receiving a call about a failed carjacking attempt at a Jack In The Box restaurant in the area. Officers ran after the suspect after he was spotted nearby. Officers say he attempted to carjack another vehicle before fleeing into a residential area between Annetta Avenue and Kauffman Avenue, sheriff's officials said.

Deputies caught up with him nearby on Kauffman Avenue, where they say he threatened them with a gun. He was shot and killed at the scene.

Officers say the gun was recovered, and they're asking for the public's help. Homicide investigators are encouraging anyone with more information to call (323) 890-5500 or to leave information anonymously on the Crime Stoppers website
