Democrats take offensive in health care debate

The Democratic Party is taking the offensive in the health care debate. KPCC’s Washington Correspondent Kitty Felde says members say they’re ready for a lusty debate.

Kitty Felde: Real or imagined, Democrats perceive an organized attack by conservative groups out to stifle the health care debate. Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer says she’s looking forward to it.

Barbara Boxer: We know there are a lot of people gonna come to our press conferences, to our town halls, to other meetings we’re having and start screaming at us. You know, what we want to do is just say, “All right, what is it that you want to say?” and hear them say it.

Everything they’re saying is not in any bill that I know of. Let them say what it is, and then let them hear our response and try to make sure we have a civil conversation.

Felde: Boxer is also likely to hear plenty from unhappy folks on the left side of the aisle. Universal health care, backed by many of the progressives who voted for Boxer, is not in any bill currently under consideration.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our connected community. We are free to tell the full truth, to hold power to account without fear or favor, and to follow facts wherever they lead. Our only loyalty is to our audiences and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen our community.

Right now, LAist has lost $1.7M in annual funding due to Congress clawing back money already approved. The support we receive before year-end will determine how fully our newsroom can continue informing, serving, and strengthening Southern California.
