Arts, culture and north of the border influence coming to the air

Beginning this week, there's something new on 89.3 FM KPCC/Southern California Public Radio. It's Q with Jian Ghomeshi, a show billed as "an energetic daily arts, culture and entertainment magazine."  In the last week, it has featured guests from Pharrell Williams to Rosanne Cash.

The program pulls together a set of perspectives that's unique on our air. It's hosted by Ghomeshi, the British-born son of Iranian immigrants, who is also a multi-platinum selling musician. The show is produced in Canada, where it also has the largest audience of any cultural affairs program broadcast there. Several U.S. public radio stations have begun carrying it in the last few years.

KPCC made the decision to air the show with the help of listeners, looking at what people were doing at 10 p.m. and asking audience members for feedback on new programs via a series of hashtags, Facebook posts and other avenues. #KPCCRadioQ was a popular choice and Q begins as a new permanent today.

"We're excited to be joining the roster of stellar programming on KPCC," said Ghomeshi.  "That the KPCC listeners helped choose Q is all the more special and makes up for the dude who spilled beer on me when I was playing at the Troubador in the late 90s."
