Angeles Forest Highway to reopen Friday
A stretch of state highway closed since heavy rains last winter will reopen Friday morning near the Angeles National Forest.
The road is Highway 2, and its recent problems began with the Station Fire. It scorched the land near the highway that connects La Canada Flintridge and the Angeles Forest Highway.
The burned areas were vulnerable to heavy rains the following January. Mudslides and slumping hillsides followed, and three big pieces of pavement washed away. California Department of Transportation crews have been making repairs.
Those repairs needed a fix just a few months ago, when – again – heavy rains brought debris sliding down. When crews open it to traffic again, the section of Highway 2 called the Angeles Crest Highway will connect to Wrightwood and Highway 138 on the northeast side of the park. Transportation officials say cars will roll up that road Friday morning for the first time in a year and a half.
