Albion Riverside Park breaks ground in Lincoln Heights
Construction began Saturday on a new $44 million park in Lincoln Heights near the L.A River.
The six-acre, triangle-shaped Albion Riverside Park will sit between Main Street and Spring Street, along the river.
The city purchased the site, which was formerly a Ross Swiss Dairy distribution center, in 2009. As part of an effort to improve public areas along the L.A. River, councilman Gil Cedillo helped the effort to turn it into an urban greenspace.
Fredy Ceja with the councilman's office tells KPCC the plan is to bring new bike and walking paths, improved landscaping and repairs to existing facilities.
"The important feature of this park is that it's not just for recreation. It's actually gonna be capturing storm water. It's gonna be reprocessing it and taking it back to the river. So it's a dual-purpose park," Ceja says.
The park is expected to open in the spring of 2019.
