Councilman Alarcon disputes allegations he lives outside his district
Los Angeles City Councilman Richard Alarcon Friday denied accusations he doesn’t live in the district he represents. Prosecutors have opened a voter fraud investigation into Alarcon.
Alarcon, 56, conceded that he hasn’t lived in his San Fernando Valley home since October.
He says a squatter moved in for two days while he was staying at his wife’s house.
“He cut up some of our clothing. He was burning books in the fireplace. He had switched all of the locks," said Alarcon. He said he walked in on the man, who was later arrested.
Alarson said that his daughter’s afraid to return, but that he’s in the process of repairing the house.
Even before the burglary, Alarcon said he’s lived at the house on and off during renovations.
He declined to provide details.
“We absolutely live there, but I’m not going to be providing facts that give people ideas that aren’t consistent with the law," said Alarcon.
The law says Alarcon must maintain a permanent residence in the district he represents.
Earlier this week, prosecutors served search warrants on his home and his wife’s a block away in Sun Valley, an area outside his district.
