With AEG off the market, what's the future of NFL in LA?
Now that billionaire Phil Anschutz has taken down the "for sale sign" for AEG, what's the effect on bringing an NFL team to Los Angeles? There are at least two plans to build a pro football stadium, but, so far, no shovels hitting dirt and no NFL team either.
Former AEG President and CEO Tim Leiweke led the company's efforts for a downtown L.A. stadium — Farmers Field — as part of a plan to lure the NFL back to L.A, but there other possible locations.
The Dodger Stadium property is reportedly in the mix. On the day Anschutz announced he was not selling AEG, Dodgers president and part-owner Stan Kasten was giving a media tour of ongoing renovations at the stadium.
Kasten wouldn't talk about Chavez Ravine as a possible home for an NFL team, but of the Los Angeles area in general, he said: "Right now, I don’t know when, but it seems inevitable that we will get an NFL team here some day."
The stadium AEG wants to build in downtown L.A. is the most recent proposal aimed at getting an NFL team in the city. David Carter of USC’s Sports Business Institute says, with Tim Leiweke now out of AEG, the future of Farmers Field is unclear.
"You have to wonder with Tim Leiweke being gone how strong, how cohesive are the rest of the relationships between the remaining AEG brass and the NFL?" said Carter. "And what does Phil Anschutz think of the NFL going forward?”
AEG said Farmers Field and bringing an NFL team to L.A. remain a priority.

Twenty-two miles east of LA., the City of Industry is still ready for developer Ed Roski to build an NFL stadium in that city. City of Industry Manager Kevin Radecki says the plans are still approved, but it’s up to the NFL and Roski’s Majestic Realty Company to decide when the time is right.
Meanwhile, fans wanting to go to an NFL football game in L.A. continue to wait and wait ... and wait.
