3-year-old dies after San Juan Capistrano condo fire
A three-year-old who was among nine injured in a San Juan Capistrano condo fire Tuesday has died, according to Orange County Fire Authority’s Steve Concialdi.
The three-year-old died at the Children’s Hospital of Orange County in Mission Viejo late Tuesday night, Concialdi said. The child’s mother and two-year-old brother remain in critical condition.
Four other children were among those injured.
Orange County fire investigators determined that the fire was caused by a child playing with a lighter in the living room, Concialdi said, adding that the condo did not have working smoke alarms.
The fire caused “significant damage to the home: $180,000 to the condo, as well as about $40,000 to the contents,” Concialdi said.
There were a total of eight condos damaged; two condos were damaged by fire, while the other six were either damaged by smoke or water, Concialdi said.
