3 adults, 6 children injured in San Juan Capistrano fire

Nine people, including six children, were injured during a fire inside an apartment complex in San Juan Capistrano on Tuesday, according to the Orange County Fire Authority's Steve Concialdi. All the patients were hospitalized.

According to Concialdi, Orange County firefighters received a call around 9:15 a.m. Tuesday about a fire at a two-story apartment complex where children were possibly trapped and people were trying to jump from a balcony. 

When firefighters arrived on scene, a female in her mid-40s jumped from the second story, Concialdi told KPCC.  

Another female in her mid-20s also jumped. Residents from the neighborhood brought out a mattress for her to jump on, according to Concialdi.

"Somebody inside was throwing some children down to some of the other residents," Concialdi said. The children were a 3-year-old, a 2-year-old and a 5-year-old.

Firefighters went into the complex and pulled out a female close to 20 years old and two boys — one 2 years old and the other 3 years old. All three were transported to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo and are in critical to grave condition.

The female in her mid-4os who jumped off the apartment balcony was also hospitalized at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo.

A 7-year-old boy and a 5-year-old boy were transported to Mission Hospital in Laguna Beach.

Three patients, the woman who jumped on a mattress and her two children, were taken to Saddleback Hospital in San Clemente. 

The fire is currently under investigation, according to Concialdi. There were fire detectors in the home, but none were functioning, Concialdi said.
