3.9-magnitude earthquake hits near Park-Windsor Hills area
A small earthquake rattled parts of Los Angeles early Sunday morning.
The quake occurred at 4:07 a.m. and was centered 1 kilometer west-northwest of the Park-Windsor Hills neighborhood near Baldwin Hills at a depth of 9.9 kilometers, according to the USGS.
Seismologist Valerie Thomas told KPCC the quake woke her up at her home in Ladera Heights.
"My house was probably less than a mile from it - it kinda felt like a short train had just driven right by the house," she said.
More than 4,000 people told the USGS they felt the quake, and many who took to Twitter described a loud, sudden jolt, followed by a rolling or rocking sensation.
"These small events remind us that we need to be prepared for bigger events that could cause damage or injury," Thomas said. "Having an earthquake prep kit at home and having emergency supplies of food and water and batteries for your flashlight in case it happens at night — those are all good things for us to remember to do."
