Cheap Fast Eats In Mid-City (And Other Headlines)

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

It’s that time of the week — Food Friday! This week, we’ll be talking about Cheap Fast Eats in Mid-City, a Mexican foodie paradise in Costa Mesa and eating your way through Buena Park.

Wait, what is Food Friday? Every Friday, we'll give you ideas on what to eat, where to go and what to cook — plus the people and stories behind the dishes.

One of my favorite spots in L.A. is the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and yes, I have taken photo in front of the Urban Light Installation. But something I didn’t know is that the area has excellent and affordable food options.

Mid-City meals

Mid-City and the Miracle Mile are home to some of the best pizza and smash burgers in all of L.A., world-class mariscos, and plentiful plant-based options in the form of dim sum and tacos. My colleagues Gab Chabrán and Brian De Los Santos went to explore and try some of the delicious food on offer.

I think it’s time for me to take a long overdue trip on that side of L.A. for the art and for the food! See the full list here and don’t forget to listen to the How To LA episode here. And, if you want to see our previous Cheap Fast Eats content, it’s all right here.

More food content:

  • Reporter Jill Replogle visits Costa Mesa’s Mercado González. It is part traditional Mexican mercado, part watering hole, part cultural center, and part grocery store.
  • Raise your hand if it’s taken you more than 20 minutes to find parking at L.A.’s Koreatown. We have another option: Buena Park’s rising Korean American presence has earned itself the official “Koreatown” label, with a vibrant food scene to prove it.

Even more food content: Visit LAist.com to see all things Food Friday! Or, check out all of our food-related stories right here!

Stay fed, L.A. There’s more news below — just keep reading.

We’re here to help curious Angelenos connect with others, discover the new, navigate the confusing, and even drive some change along the way.

Wait! One more thing...

What are you doing this weekend?

Could be age, could be me losing my sense of time and space, but it feels like every day is going by so quickly. Usually, my brain tricks me into thinking the winter months are chill and slower-paced, but not this year!

I’m doing my best to squeeze in some fun things to do before the year ends (reality: trying to inspire myself to leave the house more and be more social), so here are some of my picks for you and my future self. You can see the full list of events here.

  • Horror Hi-fi, Grandmaster Recorders, Hollywood: Alex Oxley and Roxanne Roll, the DJs of the Fleetmac Wood nights, bring their side project Horror Hi-fi to Hollywood this weekend. Join them in an evening of tech-noir, sad-girl disco, zombie-wave and Italo-giallo.
  • Post It Show 19, GR2 Art Gallery, Los Angeles: The annual show features hundreds of artists’ work on Post-it Notes. Previews of the art run from 11:30 to 1 p.m. if you want to look; sales begin at 2 p.m.
  • 2023 Holiday Marketplace, Craft Contemporary, Mid-Wilshire: Craft Contemporary holds its annual marketplace with a curated selection of one-of-a-kind jewelry, ceramics, vintage and contemporary textiles, craft supplies, homewares and other items. While shopping, enjoy drinks, music and holiday workshops.
