Topline:

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer convicted of the involuntary manslaughter of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins through her mishandling of prop guns on the set of "Rust," has been released from prison early. She will remain on parole until May 23, 2026.

Why was she released: Gutierrez-Reed was released on Friday after serving nearly 13 months of her 18-month sentence. According to media reports, good behaviors and a pre-sentence credit were some of the reasons behind the early release.

The backstory: In April 2024, Hutchins received a maximum penalty for her role in the death of Halyna Hutchins and the maiming of ‘Rust’ director Joel Souza. Before issuing the sentence last April, Santa Fe judge Mary Sommer said Gutierrez hadn't expressed accountability for the accidental death.
