Top techno night Compression features a double-bill of headliners this Friday at King King in Hollywood. DJing alongside New York’s Francois K will be Los Angeles legend John Tejada. They're two DJ/producers who have walked very different paths to global dance music stardom.

“Both have created a narrative of their own in techno and house culture over the years,” said Compression boss Robert “Robtronik” Pointer in a recent chat with LAist. Francois K entered "the music we love on the ground floor." From disco A&R, to work in Depeche Mode’s studio, to countless techno remixes, odds are you’ve danced to a groove Francois has touched. “Bringing him in for an intimate show is a big deal for the dedicated fans of house and techno.” The French-born New Yorker was a regular spinner at Studio 54 and the Paradise Garage.

Though his music takes him all over the world, Tejada, thirtysomething, has played many Hollywood night clubs and downtown LA warehouses (see video.) He’s even performed at the Disney Concert Hall. “John is an amazingly talented musician," said Pointer who describes Tejada’s nocturnal melodies as “sometimes melancholy” yet “driving.” They can be sampled on Fabric 44, Tejada’s excellent contribution to the London superclub’s CD series.

Compression will bring in their world-class Funktion One sound system to King King. It has “amazing fidelity,” said Pointer through a knowing grin. If you get to the club early you'll get to hear him warm it up as the night's opening jock.

One year ago, Congress voted to defund public media, eliminating a critical $1.7 million from our budget every year going forward. But they couldn’t silence us, and we’re not going anywhere. LAist is now 100% community funded and that means we’re taking our future into our own hands and turning to you to keep local reporting strong.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our nonprofit newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our communities. We are free to follow facts wherever they lead and to hold power to account without fear or favor.
