More LA spots to try
  • The tacos served up at the seasonal weekly hilltop farmers' market at Hollywood's Yamashiro have attracted a fanatical following, and now its time for those tasty bites--and the chef behind them--to step out on their own. Komida, the off-shoot storefront project of Yamashiro Executive Chef Brock Kleweno, is opening as-planned October 6th.
  • Things are heating up at Clifton's Cafeteria in Downtown, but the kitchen is closed for now. As part of their long-term plans for renovating and updating the classic, kitschy restaurant, this week Clifton's closed down for what they anticipate will be a three to six month stretch.
  • If you are as hooked on that first-thing-in-the-morning caffeine jolt as many of us are, every day in the U.S.A. is "coffee day." So every coffee drinker has their day, but tomorrow is the day for coffee drinkers. September 29th is National Coffee Day.
  • Our days of being able to legally consume foie gras (fattened duck liver) in California are waning, and as the enforcement of the statewide ban nears, chefs who love the delicacy are making the most of it.
  • Despite the seasonal changes, the warmth of southern California means we still have some summer fruits around, one of which are raspberries! Get them fresh at the farmer's markets around town, or choose a pick-your-own farm to visit and pick yourself a flat of fresh fruit!
  • In 2012, Californians may have the opportunity to vote on a grassroots ballot measure requiring food purveyors to label food when it contains genetically-modified organisms, or GMOs. GMOs are organisms that have been genetically engineered to include genes from other organisms.
