More LA spots to try
  • The hysteria over listeria continues, and now there's a new culprit: shredded romaine lettuce. California's True Leaf Farms is voluntarily recalling 2,498 cartons of shredded romaine that may have been contaminated with listeria, according to the FDA. That's the same contaminant that has been linked to the deaths of 15 people who ate cantaloupes from Colorado tainted with the organism.
  • Things are heating up at Clifton's Cafeteria in Downtown, but the kitchen is closed for now. As part of their long-term plans for renovating and updating the classic, kitschy restaurant, this week Clifton's closed down for what they anticipate will be a three to six month stretch.
  • Our days of being able to legally consume foie gras (fattened duck liver) in California are waning, and as the enforcement of the statewide ban nears, chefs who love the delicacy are making the most of it.
  • If you are as hooked on that first-thing-in-the-morning caffeine jolt as many of us are, every day in the U.S.A. is "coffee day." So every coffee drinker has their day, but tomorrow is the day for coffee drinkers. September 29th is National Coffee Day.
  • Despite the seasonal changes, the warmth of southern California means we still have some summer fruits around, one of which are raspberries! Get them fresh at the farmer's markets around town, or choose a pick-your-own farm to visit and pick yourself a flat of fresh fruit!
  • In 2012, Californians may have the opportunity to vote on a grassroots ballot measure requiring food purveyors to label food when it contains genetically-modified organisms, or GMOs. GMOs are organisms that have been genetically engineered to include genes from other organisms.
