More LA spots to try
  • Angeleno cocktailians, start your engines. The five finalists of the 2nd Annual L.A.’s Best Bartender Competition have been announced. Now, we knew last week that Joseph Brooke of Next Door Lounge won as People’s Choice and therefore automatically earned a spot as a finalist. But who are the other four he’ll be going up against in the final showdown?
  • Brace yourselves, loft dwellers: there's not going to be a downtown Trader Joe's in the near future. If you want shrink-wrapped veggies and Charles Shaw wine, you're going to have to continue hiking up to Silver Lake or Pasadena for your fix.
  • For residents of North Hollywood and adjacent communities, going to a decent weekly farmers market means a Tuesday evening schlep to Sherman Oaks to the Woodman Avenue Farmers' Market, or joining the fray at the popular Sunday Studio City Farmers' Market. Starting Saturday, October 1st, though, the NoHo Arts District is getting their own weekly farmers' market.
  • An outbreak of illness caused by listeria found in one Colorado company's cantaloupe has now killed eight people, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). So far, no deaths have occurred in California, though as of yesterday's CDC update, one person has been sickened in our state.
  • Who can resist Schweddy Balls? It turns out One Millions Moms can. The conservative Christian group complains that Ben & Jerry's new SNL-referencing ice cream flavor "Schweddy Balls" is not appropriate for the little ones.
  • It's time to raise your glass for a toast in appreciation to Governor Jerry Brown, who today signed into law SB 32, the bill that ends a decades-old ban on infused spirits in the state.
