What's Your Favorite Cheeseburger? LAist Wants To Crown The Best

A graphic uses a mix of script font and capital letters to announce the LAist Tournament of Cheeseburgers, and the location for the final winners to be announced at Smorgasburg Los Angeles. All around the lettering there are iconic images of cheeseburgers in playful fight and competition poses: Two are facing off in a tug of war. Another one is lifting weights. One is holding a sword and a shield made out of a slice of pickle. There is one using mushroom slices for boxing gloves, and so on.

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

Cheeseburgers are a staple in Southern California, as common as palm trees and the word “the” in front of our freeways.

That’s because the cheeseburger was reportedly invented here back in 1924. Yes, right here, in Pasadena, which recently celebrated the cheeseburger's 100th anniversary.

To honor this iconic part of our culinary culture, we’re teaming up with our friends at Smorgasburg LA to host the Tournament of Cheeseburgers.

This contest is not just any competition; it's a celebration of who has the best cheeseburger in all of SoCal, and we want YOU to help nominate and pick the winner!

It’s all going down on Sunday, July 7, when we’ll announce the top vote getters at Smorgasburg LA at The Row in DTLA. Entrance is free, so come one and come all!

Why now, why cheeseburgers?

A quick bit of history: Legend has it that in 1924, a Pasadena roadside stand owner named Lionel Sternberger was looking to drum up business and set himself apart from the other burger spots nearby. So he slapped a slice of cheese on a burger, and served it, and customers loved it.

A sidewalk plaque on Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena commemorates this magical moment and the location where the drive-up roadside stand called the Rite Spot once stood.

A black and white photo of a road stand from the 1930's. It has a Spanish tile roof, with a sign that says Coca Cola on the top. Next to it is a brightly lit neon sign which says RITE SPOT. Several people are sitting at stools and leaning on the counter, looking at the camera. It's night time.

Now, you get to make the history books.

This Tournament of Cheeseburgers is your chance to crown the best cheeseburger in Southern California.

The juicy details

We're not just looking for just any burger. We want to know about your favorite independently owned burger establishments.

Whether it's a renowned restaurant, hidden gem, or pop-up, if they're making mouthwatering burgers in SoCal, they're fair game. Here's everything you need to know:

Starting May 1 and over the next several weeks, we want you to nominate your favorite cheeseburger in Southern California — and vote for your favorites here:

Can I self nominate? Or nominate the place where I work?

And yes, you can self nominate. If you have a restaurant or pop-up that makes a great cheeseburger, or you work at a place that makes a great cheeseburger, this is a chance to let the rest of Southern California know about it.

And on July 7, at Smorgasburg LA, we’ll crown the first, second and third place cheeseburgers.

Who will win? The burger anticipation is building. Only you can decide!

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
