Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

For all the best burgers is Los Angeles’ talk that gets thrown around the Southern California blogosphere, you’re not likely to hear about many spots outside the city limits. But if The Lab Brewing Company in Agoura Hills has their way, that’ll change soon enough.

From now through Wednesday night, The Lab is offering up a Top 10 burger challenge to anyone willing to stop in. The idea is simple: try their signature Lab Burger, and if you’re not convinced that it’s one of the ten best beef and bun combinations you’ve had in Los Angeles, they won’t make you pay a dime for it. Sound like a tasty deal? Keep reading.

The eponymous burger is ground in house from a combination of Wagyu and sirloin beef, plus caramelized onions, gruyere and blue cheeses, and a hefty tuft of arugula. Seem familiar? Now, whether or not the Lab Burger is the Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde to the famous Father’s Office creation remains to be seen by anyone willing to take a ride up the 101. And if you’re going that far, I'm sure the guys at The Lab wouldn't mind if you stuck around for a housemade pint or two.

The ‘best burger or its free’ deal is only running through this Wednesday, but the Lab Burger itself will continue on inside the restaurant for the foreseeable future. And for any of you mischievous folks just looking to take advantage of a free burger, come prepared: not only will they want to hear your better burger list, they’ll also make you swear to the hamburger gods that you aren’t just in it for the free meal. Trust us: you do not want to anger the hamburger gods.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
