What To Expect At Tonight's BET Awards

The 2017 BET Awards take place tonight at the Microsoft Theater downtown, celebrating the best in Black excellence from the past year. Leslie Jones will be hosting the awards, with performances from A$AP Rocky, SZA, Big Sean, Future, Kamasi Washington, Lil Yachty, and more. Last year, the awards featured the onlytribute to Prince worth watching, and Beyonce and Kendrick Lamar's performance of Freedom brought America's political divide to the stage, so it's safe to say this year's performance will be equally powerful. Also, considering Beyonce is nominated for several awards, it might be the night America finally gets details on her twins straight from the source.
This year's awards will also honor Chance the Rapper with the Humanitarian Award (last year's award went to Jesse Williams) and the Lifetime Achievement Award will go to New Edition. BET's New Edition biopic The New Edition Story premiered in January to BET's highest ratings since the 2012 premiere of The Game.
The awards are an unparalleled event in Los Angeles; the Sunday night event is the capstone of the whole BET Experience, a yearly three-day festival at L.A. Live. This year, the pre-awards concerts included Kid Cudi, Snoop Dogg, Bryson Tiller, DJ Khaled, A$AP Rocky, ScHoolboy Q, Gucci Mane, Rae Sremmurd, and way too many other artists to list here. Fans had the opportunity to buy tickets to tonight's awards show as well, in case three huge concerts in a row wasn't enough. Considering most music festivals have a 5:1 ratio of beach-y shoegaze garage bands to hip hop artists, the BET Experience differentiates itself by focusing exclusively on rap, hip hop, and R&B.
The awards are also, of course, an awards show. Besides the performances and the festival, BET will hand out trophies to the winners of music, acting, and athletics categories. Here's the full list of nominees:

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.
Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.
We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.
No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.
Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.
Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
