What the Funky Winkerbean?

LA Daily News readers are up-n-arms due to some changes happening at the Valley paper, the most controversial being the removal of ten apparently-popular cartoon strips and the addition of some new ones.

The DN went out of their way to allow their readers an avenue to complain if they want, and the people are taking them up on it. Infact the DN opinion blog, Friendly Fire, posted some of the emails, and the comments of that post has some classic moments where cheesy strips like Funky Winkerbean and Dinette Set are garnering a lot of support from the shocked readership. Even Mallard is getting some love.

Your new lineup of comic strips is terrible. They are trashy and juvenile. Thank you for keeping Family Circus, Luann, and Drabble.... but where are For Better or Worse and Funky Winkerbean??? These are series strips (not serious, although some of their topics ARE serious) with a continuing story line. PLEASE bring back at least these two! AND Mallard (or is he just too right-wing conservative for the Daily News?) - Jackie Houchin I've been a subscriber for almost 40 years and I am growing ever increasingly disappointed in your newspaper. One of my daily favorite things was reading the comic section and as of this morning ALL of my favorites are no longer there.
What happened to the Dinette Set, Mallard, For Better or Worse, One Big Happy, and Funky Winkerbean to name a few?????
Several of the new ones will never catch on with me! I can always go on line and read my favorites there, but if I'm doing that I might have to reconsider the necessity of my subscription.
I'm not too impressed with the changes to the "U" section on the whole - Anna Bruce

In a telling sign about our misplaced priorities, the previous post on Friendly Fire are notes from Chris Weinkopf's

exclusive interview with Cardinal Mahoney . It's a dynamite post filled with tough questions, bad answers, and good followups. That post is getting less comments than the Funky Winkerbean outrage.h/t LA Observed

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.
