Video: Arnold Creeps People Out At Madame Tussauds

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

Thank God Arnold Schwarzenegger is back to doing what he does best—starring in apocalyptic summer movies and being hilariously awkward.

The former governor of California (that still doesn't seem real, does it?) donned his Terminator attire to scare the crap out of people at Madame Tussauds in Hollywood, coming to life as people got close to take pictures with what they assumed was a wax figure, as the The Hollywood Reporter points out. "He looks real," one woman says, before he comes to life and says "BECAUSE I AM" and sticks his arms out like creepy Uncle Frankenstein. In the video, Schwarzenegger also faces off with an Arnold impersonator on Hollywood Boulevard and uses a selfie stick.

It's a publicity stunt, sure, but it's for a good cause—the video urges viewers to enter a contest in support of After School All-Stars, an L.A. non-profit that offers community and mentoring to low-income, at-risk youth. The contest is pay-to-enter, and the winner gets to go to the Terminator: Genisys premiere in L.A., take selfies with Schwarzenegger and "drink Schnapps with Arnold at the exclusive star-studded after party," among other winnings.

This isn't the first time Schwarzenegger has disguised himself on behalf of After School All-Stars—last year he dressed as a mustached Gold's Gym employee in Venice. And this isn't even the first time today that Schwarzenegger has popped up in a bizarre video—he kind of asked J.J. Watt to be in the next Terminator movie after the NFL superstar did a terrible impression of him at the CMT Awards earlier this month. We're not sure if that's a real invite, but stranger things have happened. Like Arnold Schwarzenegger becoming governor of California.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
