TV Junkie Interview: Candace Bailey, New Co-Host of G4's 'Attack of the Show'
Candace Bailey is the new co-host of G4's "Attack of the Show" (Weekdays at 7pm - 4pm if you watch the east coast live feed)
You've seen the billboards all over LA: yes, G4's "Attack of the Show" has a new co-host by the name of Candace Bailey. After Olivia Munn left @AOTS to do segments on "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" and then co-star on NBC's "Perfect Couples," we wondered how long longtime host, and the personification of "Attack of the Show" in our opinion, Kevin Peirera would be flying solo. Not long, in fact, but we let Bailey get a few months under her belt before we approached for an interview. Here's what Pereira had to say about his new co-host: "Candace is the sweetest thing on two heels. Her immediate dedication to the show, passion and sense of responsibility has been a blessing to the entire team." That's a ringing endorsement but we know that Pereira is nothing if not a complete gentleman so we had to see for ourselves how this newbie had adapted to one of our favorite, non-primetime shows on TV: "Attack of the Show" is where you go to get the lowdown on consumer technology, gaming, and pop-culture packaged in an incredibly impressive (and humorous) live show - yes, the show is shot live! Last year we paid a visit to the set for a live broadcast where it was amazing to see all the components come together: video clips, live interviews, live product reviews, sketches, you name it. It was intimidating to be there while just hiding behind the cameras, we couldn't imagine what it would be like to walk in front of them.
TV Junkie: So you're originally from Florida and then made your way to LA via New York?
Candace Bailey: My Mother started taking me to New York when I was 12 and I just fell in love with the place. Then I started doing kid modeling and commercials and I went on from there, knowing what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.
TV Junkie: Were you interested in theater, Broadway-type stuff?
Candace Bailey: Not really but I did end up auditioning for a Broadway show. It's kind of a sad story - I did go through a whole audition process which ended with a phone call: "We have good news and bad news, the good news is that you got the part and the bad news is that the production is getting cancelled." So there you have it, I was _almost_ on Broadway.
TV Junkie: So how long have you been in Los Angeles?
Candace Bailey: I've been here for about six years.
TV Junkie: And how are you liking it?
Candace Bailey: I'm from north Florida so climate-wise it's very similar and comfortable. It's pretty much like LA weather. I grew up in a little beach town, so we were always at the beach. I am liking it here though but I wish it was easier to get around. I miss that about New York, where the longest taxi ride is 10 minutes or you have the option to take the subway and get anywhere. If you have to go anywhere here you had better give yourself an hour.
TV Junkie: Do you have any favorite places to go?
Candace Bailey: When I first moved out here I lived right next to Toast and so I really didn't go out to find a lot of spots because I would just go there, I could walk there, and I'd be there multiple times a week. I love the ArcLight, I love that you can pick your seat - it makes going to the movies so much easier, and I love the Grove, which is very convenient for me, the Farmer's Market, it such a great place, so much fun.
TV Junkie: What's impressed me about @AOTS is its live factor and I know that you've had experience on another live show, but is @AOTS more intense?
Candace Bailey: When I was on Nickelodeon we were an interstitial show, we would come back on in between the cartoons and commercial breaks, we were live for about 20 or 25 minutes a day for the entire day with the live segment being at the very most, 4 minutes. But on G4 we're on live for much longer segments, it's much more exciting to me, and we have so much more going on. We do some crazy crazy stuff, with the skits that we do and the interviews. Last week we did a giant game of Operation but live. It's all live so if something goes wrong we just have to roll with it!
TV Junkie: Has there been a learning curve to get up to speed on the technology aspect of the show?
Candace Bailey: Oh my god, yes! I though I knew what was going on out there before coming to the show and then I went to CES (Consumer Electronics Show) and I was just blown away, there is so much more than I could have possibly imagined. So, yeah, it's great, this keeps me so much more up to date. We have a gadget-con a couple times a week where we talk about new things coming out: tablets, TVs, apps, everything. I already feel like I've learned so much but I know that I have a long way to go.
TV Junkie: What's your favorite gadget or app? Something you use everyday, something that's indispensable.
Candace Bailey: I really like the tablets, I love my iPad, I absolutely take it everywhere and use it for everything. I also like the 3D TVs, not that I could watch them on 3D all the time, I think it would drive me crazy, but they're cool and I like the option.
TV Junkie: How's it been working with Kevin "Sprinkles" Pereira?
Candace Bailey: Kevin? He's such an asshole! [Laughs] I'm kidding. He's incredible, he's so smart, with it, and so giving as a host. If I say something crazy he'll just run with it, he won't make me feel stupid, well, maybe sometimes. He makes the work experience so much better. I have such a good time with him. I really can't say enough wonderful things about him.
TV Junkie: He seems to walk the walk in terms of everything the show is about.
Candace Bailey: Yeah! He knows exactly what he's talking about. He's very obsessive.
TV Junkie: Can you hint at some stuff coming up that you're excited about doing with the show?
Candace Bailey: I think we're always looking to set more world records. We're always looking forward to some of the new guests coming up, I really want to talk to Emmy Rossum.
TV Junkie: Have you been watching "Shameless"?
Candace Bailey: I saw the pilot and I've DVR'd it. I auditioned for it so I'm really interested in seeing how the script I read turned out.
TV Junkie: Have you received strange photo requests? Perhaps for your feet?
Candace Bailey: No, not yet, not through my Twitter account. But I did get a request through G4 to share the measurement of my arms and then the measurement of my arms while flexing [Laughs]. Now I don't know why you would want that, but No! I'm not going to give you that. Nothing about my feet yet.
TV Junkie: It's funny because one of your correspondents is perpetually pestered for photos of her feet.
Candace Bailey: Is it Alison [Haislip]?
TV Junkie: Yes!
Candace Bailey: [Laughs] That is sooo funny! Foot fetishists! I'll be keeping my shoes on as much as I can.
