TV Junkie: Sunday, True Bloody Sunday
Other than Sunday with its ever-popular "True Blood," weekends will still be a little sparse until the second week of September. Speaking of "True Blood," have you had enough of the witches yet? How about nudity in every-other scene? Me neither. It is, however, always a strange feeling to go from the titillation of "True Blood" to the stomach-churning anxiety of "Breaking Bad," but that's why we have alcohol.
Because of the sparse TV schedule we included a bunch of late summer cycling events because, what the hell. While it's been great to get some of the best cyclists in the world, including this year's Tour de France winner Cadel Evans, to the USA Pro Cycling Challenge in Colorado, the Versus footage has been less than thrilling and will suffer from pre-emption. Don't miss the Vuelta on Universal Sports this weekend though, as there will be two much-vaunted mountain stages.
Of course you'll have to prepare for incessant coverage of Hurricane Irene and this is after the East Coast got a ton of coverage for that 5.8 earthquake a few days ago. But let's be realistic, a 5.8 in LA would still capture headlines, whether or not 1,000 pound chunks of stone fell off of buildings in the city. Also, think about overyhyped every drop of rain in LA is, so who cries "wolf" more often?
Last night I went to a taping of John Mulaney's new Comedy Central special and it was fantastic. The show won't air until early 2012 and I hope to speak to the man before then. Mulaney had given me a little glimpse of the show when I saw him at Just For Laughs in Montreal and he really delivered last night.
The boys from Comedy Central's "Workaholics" have a little Facebook contest going where you have a chance to get a shout out on the show. The show returns with new episodes on September 20th at 10:30pm which I'm really happy about as Comedy Central took a chance on this show and it's very funny.
Deadline has a great little interview with the team from NBC's "30 Rock": producers Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, and director Beth McCarthy. Fey could have taken the high road in the interview when asked about Tracy Morgan's "anti-gay rant" by saying, "hey, he was a comedian in a comedy club" but she didn't and that was a little disappointing. I wonder what her attitude would be if someone produced comprehensive footage of all the Second City shows she was in.
Actor Michael Showers who recently played a police chief on HBO's "Treme" was found dead in the Mississippi River two days ago. He's been on everything from TV shows like AMC's "Breaking Bad" to indie films like I Love You Phillip Morris. He's played a wide range of characters and I recognized him as soon as I saw his IMDB page. What a shame to lose such a great actor.
