TV Junkie: 'Lopez Tonight' Cancelled; PaleyFest Family This Weekend
Yesterday TBS cancelled "Lopez Tonight" which had been struggling, ratings-wise, after being pushed to 12am by "Conan" - what did they think would happen? This is a shame as "Lopez Tonight" paved the way for late night, and Conan O'Brien's success on TBS. Canceling "Lopez Tonight" returns late night TV to its lily-white roots and while I know that "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" will do its best to have as many urban (code word for "black") guests as it can, it just won't be the same. While I wasn't a regular viewer, I respected that Lopez served an audience that wasn't getting any play on the other late night shows. Thanks for your efforts George, you were undone by circumstances created by others.
Speaking of late night, the roundtable lineup on tonight's "Chelsea Lately" is fantastic: Chris Franjola, Josh Wolf, & Fortune Feimster. For another "Chelsea Lately" tidbit I've embedded a behind-the-scenes interview with Heather McDonald at the end of this post.
20th Century Fox TV is developing a Roseanne Barr 1/2-hour sitcom that seems sadly reminiscent of "Roseanne" and that's unfortunate. It may be what she wants to do but I'd rather see more of the humor she revealed on an episode of last season's "The Green Room With Paul Provenza": weird, biting, and a little dark. Coincidentally, there's a great new episode of "The Green Room" tonight with Margaret Cho, Richard Lewis, Jeffrey Ross, and Kumail Nanjiani at 8pm and/or 11pm on Showtime.
If you've got kids and/or love Disney Channel and Cartoon Network, you've got to head to the Paley Center for PaleyFest Family this weekend. On Saturday, Disney is the focus with "Phineas & Ferb," "Fish Hooks," and "Kickin' It" featured while Sunday is Cartoon Network with "Ben 10," "Dude, What Would Happen," and "Adventure Time." For me this makes PaleyFest Family all about "Adventure Time"!!!! Love that show - so funny and weird (new episodes on Mondays at 8pm - forever please!)
