I may have complained about this year's Emmy nominations a couple times last week, but that doesn't mean I'm letting the organization I'm a member of, the Television Critics Association, get away with some poor nominations, particularly in the "Outstanding Achievement In Drama" category: "Friday Night Lights" (DirecTV/NBC), "Game of Thrones" (HBO), "Justified" (FX), "Mad Men" (AMC), "The Good Wife" (CBS). Sorry but #FNL should have been nominated 2 seasons ago because that's when that show needed the help, "Mad Men" didn't have a great season compared to many other worthy shows, and "The Good Wife" is .....boring and pedestrian in the kind of way a good TV show from the 1970s is now boring and pedestrian. I'm also disappointed that of the 12 "Individual Achievement" nominees, only 3 are women. You can see the nominees I submitted here, a lot of whom have made the final list. I'll post my picks and my predicted winners later this week.
Tonight marks the premiere of Lisa Kudrow's "Web Therapy" on Showtime at 8pm. When I first wrote about "Web Therapy," it had just started as a web series in 2008 - these original clips have been compiled into 1/2 hour chunks for broadcast on Showtime. In the series Kudrow plays an inappropriate therapist who conducts her sessions with her (amazing cast of) clients via web cam. You can hear more about the show directly from Kudrow herself on the most recent episode of KCRW's "The Business."
It's with some sadness that we note Universal has discarded a proposal from Ron Howard and Imagine to bring Stephen King's The Dark Tower series to life in both film and television. There were to be 3 films and at least 1 TV series but alas, it is not to be. I had first read an excerpt of the first book, The Gunslinger, as a short story over 30 years ago and I had always thought it should have been made into a film. After the book its subsequent series were published, it was obvious that they should make it to TV in some form or another. This is at least the 2nd time The Dark Tower has preceded beyond the pipe-dream phase and has been shot down. I don't think we'll hear about it again for at least another 5 years.
