TV Junkie: NBC Unveils New Shows; 'Showrunners' Doc; Winters on WTFpod
There will be a lot of season and series finales this week, we'll try to stay on top of them for you.
Over the weekend on Twitter we saw that a documentary about showrunners of American TV shows is being made. The movie will be called Showrunners and it will include a couple of our favorites, Kurt Sutter of "Sons of Anarchy" and Mike Royce of "Men of a Certain Age" but there are many more included. Check out the Showrunner Facebook page to check out a trailer and follow their doings - no idea when the movie is coming out but we can't wait for it!
We're not going to focus on the network bloodletting that continued over the weekend with Fox and CBS cleaning house. Let's look at what the entertainment president of NBC said in his Sunday conference call - Bob Greenblatt, formerly of Showtime, is the guy everybody is hoping will turn NBC around, getting some shows in the Nielsen top ten, without losing the critical acclaim. Scott Collins at the LA Times has a detailed post about what Greenblatt said in his call, but the most significant developments were to get 10pm dramas back on the schedule every night and to open up Wednesday as another big comedy night for the network. There's a female slant to a lot of the comedies including the following: Chelsea Handler will executive produce a show based on her book of the same name, "Are You There Vodka? It's Me Chelsea" starring Laura Prepon (of "That 70s Show"); "Bent" starring Amanda Peet; and "Up All Night" with Christina Applegate. We're going to reserve judgement on these until we get some screeners but you can see some preview clips of Handler and Peet's show on The Hollywood Reporter.
Maybe we'll learn more this morning at the NBC upfronts in New York. Watch for our video from the red carpet this week.
You absolutely have got to check out last week's WTFpod by Marc Maron with Jonathan Winters. I've been huge fan of Winters since I was a little kid, I have albums (as in vinyl!) of Winters, and I've seen him do impromptu shows in a record store I worked at in Santa Barbara. We tried to get an interview with Winters a few years ago but his wife was in the midst of a long illness and the timing wasn't right. Maron made the trip up to Santa Barbara last month to conduct the interview which again turned into an impromptu show by Winters. The man is a genius - check out WTFpod #173.
