You may have heard about HBO's new fantasy series, "Game of Thrones," via any number of advertising media, including show-themed food trucks plying the streets of Los Angeles and New York. The show is set to premiere this coming Sunday, April 17, at 9pm but we just got an email from the network about their re-screening plans: after the 9pm premiere, "Game of Thrones" will be immediately be repeated twice; on Monday the 18th, the first episode "will be spotlighted on six HBO channels simultaneously the next day" at 9:00 p.m. on HBO, HBO2, HBO Signature, HBO Comedy, HBO Zone and HBO Latino with back-to-back repeats on HBO2 at 9:00pm 10:05pm and 11:15pm.

Now, while we think "Game of Thrones" is a very good show (review to come later this week), this saturation appears to be overkill to us as well as undermining to the stated purposes of the various channels that HBO offers. Is HBO lacking confidence in this new show? Granted, this departure into the fantasy genre is somewhat new for HBO if it's good it's good and that quality is what HBO should be marketing, not accessibility. As a reviewer, we're not sure now about what to tell you to watch this coming weekend. With a lot of great Sunday night programming, do we need to emphasize that "Game of Thrones" is what you should be watching when you literally have 11 opportunities to see the show over a period of 27 hours? Has HBO not heard of the DVR? With a suite of channels HBO should always be offering variety - not saturation.
