Thursday: Flaming Lips Open Pop-Up Shop, Play Not-So-Secret Myspace Show in Hollywood

One year ago, Congress defunded public media. Now that we're 100% community funded, please become a sustaining member or increase your existing membership today.

Psychedelic extremity gets up and close and personal this Thursday, when Oklahoma’s Flaming Lips open their very own pop-up shop in the lobby of the the Nike/ Ricardo Montalban Theater. Open from noon to midnight, the shop promises “unique artifacts available on this day and location” including a vinyl pressing exclusive to the event, as well as tickets to see the Lips play a full set inside the theater that night. Tickets are also available to purchasers of their new album Embryonic at Amoeba Records, starting today, and giveaways are being set up through KCRW and the LA Weekly.

Don’t get too cocky if you do snatch up one of those tickets, because the release notes, “Ticket holders are not guaranteed seating. All ticket holders will need to be in the venue by 7:30. Theater doors will be open at 6:30.” As seating is on a first come, first served basis, prepare to wait a good long time if you intend to get inside. Given the intimate and hospitable space - Throbbing Gristlesounded amazing there earlier this year - and the generally excellent quality of the current Flaming Lips show, last seen at the Greek in August, this promises to be one worth waiting for. Tell the boss you've been abducted by aliens.

The Flaming Lips Pop-Up Shop is open from noon to midnight on Thursday, August 15 at the Nike/Ricardo Montalban Theater, 1615 N. Vine Street.

One year ago, Congress voted to defund public media, eliminating a critical $1.7 million from our budget every year going forward. But they couldn’t silence us, and we’re not going anywhere. LAist is now 100% community funded and that means we’re taking our future into our own hands and turning to you to keep local reporting strong.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our nonprofit newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our communities. We are free to follow facts wherever they lead and to hold power to account without fear or favor. Our only loyalty is to our readers and listeners and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen Southern California’s communities.
