'The Canyons:' A Photo Guide To The L.A. Locations Where Lindsay Lohan & Cast Suffer Boredom And Betrayal

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

In The Canyons, Lindsay Lohan plays Tara, a woman who's not above living off her rich boyfriend Christian (porn star James Deen) even if he's a sleazy guy who routinely surprises her by inviting over random strangers for group sex.

There's also Christian's assistant Gina (Amanda Brooks), who's trying to produce a movie funded by Christian starring her boyfriend, Ryan (Nolan Funk), who, naturally, has a history with Tara.

It all plays out across some highly recognizable and scenic locations in the Los Angeles area, including Malibu's ultra-modern "Beethoven House," which spoiled rich Christian calls home.

Director Paul Schrader called it a movie for the "post-porn generation" which is appropriate, since it's reminiscent of a Cinemax thriller; there's a fair share of kink and nudity and the ever-hovering threat of violence.

Sadly, no one gets thrown down those steep stairs in the Beethoven House or over any Malibu cliffs. And what appears to be an imminent collision with a UPS truck as Tara and Gina lunch at Cafe Med fails to materialize as the truck turns at the last moment.

There is, however, a scuffle at Amoeba Music in Hollywood and a far worse crime at one of these locations. (Why spoil it for all you eager viewers?)

Gothamist was fairly enthusiastic about the film, calling Lohan's performance in some scenes "nothing short of spectacular."

The Canyons, which is unrated, is available on VOD on August 2. It opens August 9 at the Sundance Sunset Cinema in L.A.
