Status Update is a new play by LA-based Dorothy Fortenberry that workshops this weekend at the Odyssey Theatre. The premise sounds perfect for these plugged-in times. The heroine ditches a small birthday party that her boyfriend’s thrown for her because she has 534 other friends to see on Facebook. She falls headfirst into the Internet. Literally. Like Alice in Wonderland, she encounters a new world, where she runs into her mother, a keyboard cat, an old boyfriend and many political causes that need her support ASAP. Will she choose this virtual world over the real one? Fortenberry’s play questions whether that’s bad after all.

Directed by Becca Wolff, the play features music by Colin Wambsgans, animation by Kerstin Hovland.

Status Update workshops at The Odyssey Theatre (Dec 10-11) this weekend only. 2055 S. Sepulveda Blvd. b/w Santa Monica Blvd. and Olympic in West LA (90025). 8 pm. Tickets: $10.
