RIP TOMKAT: Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes Are Divorcing
After six years, one child and one very damaged sofa, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are getting divorced. Update below: Holmes filed for divorce in NYC yesterday.
People broke the news and Holmes' lawyer said, "This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family. Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest." Of course, there have been rumors of Holmes entering into a marriage contract with Cruise ever since their whirlwind romance, which started weeks after she called offher engagement to Chris Klein in 2005. Cruise proposed to Homles on June 17, 2005 (on top of the Eiffel Tower), then she got pregnant, having Suri Cruise on April 18, 2006. Then, on November 18, 2006, the pair were married in Italy, with pals like Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, Jim Carrey, Victoria and David Beckham, Leah Remini and Jenna Elfman in attendance.
In 2008, biographer Andrew Morton's book about Tom Cruise included claims from other Scientologists that Suri was conceived with sperm from L. Ron Hubbard and the belief that Cruise is second-in-command in the Church (the Church of Scientology denounced the book). In an interview with the AP at the time, Morton addressed the question whether there was a marriage contract:
Morton: I think ... in a way there is a parallel between her story and that of Princess Diana. Diana was enamored with Prince Charles when she was a schoolgirl, she had his picture on the wall and was telling her school friends that one day she would marry him. Similarly, with Katie, she used to tell her sisters that one day she would marry Tom Cruise. When she was on the set of "Dawson's Creek," she was teased mercilessly because she had this crush on Tom Cruise. When she met him ... he had her at hello. Very soon afterward, she found herself alienated from her friends. She found herself surrounded by Scientologists. She got rid of her manager. She got rid of her management. Observers who interviewed her at the time used to call her deadeye Katie. The reason why that was significant is because she got her job as Joey on "Dawson's Creek" in the first place because of her incredible eyes, because of the life and sparkle in her eyes. It seemed to people who were interviewing her at the time that she changed and changed significantly.
Update: TMZ reports that Holmes filed the divorce documents in NYC, citing "irreconciliable differences" and asking for sole custody of Suri: "We also know Katie is asking for a "suitable amount" of child support. Katie also asks for a division of property in her divorce docs, although we know there was a significant prenup that is based on California law. Katie makes no mention of the prenup in her filing." Also: Tom allegedly didn't see it coming!
Update: Cruise's rep has commented, "Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy to work this out."

One more: Holmes just wasn't that into Scientology, sources say.
